HYPNOTHERAPY TRAINING OR HYPNOSIS TRAINING?

There is a big difference between hypnosis training and hypnotherapy training, they are not the same. Hypnosis training will teach you how to hypnotise someone, that is putting another person (or yourself) into a hypnotic trance state. Hypnotherapy training will teach you how to carry out some form of therapeutic process on someone (or yourself) whilst in a hypnotic trance state.

It is important to differentiate which type of training you want to undertake.

Hypnotherapy training means that you will learn how to hypnotise others (and yourself) and then perform some sort of physical or psychological healing/treatment process, like psychotherapy or pain/symptom control whilst the person is in a hypnotic state, so that they can experience better physical or psychological health sometime after the hypnosis session. This is sometimes referred to as clinical hypnosis, medical hypnosis or therapeutic hypnosis.

There are some types of hypnotherapy referred to as hypnotherapy coaching, where the focus is on helping individuals improve their personal performance and skills, as opposed to treating medical and psychological conditions.

Learning hypnosis to hypnotise someone for entertainment purposes (stage hypnosis) or any other purpose, usually to have them do something in the trance state is not hypnotherapy.

Be aware that Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is not hypnotherapy, although there is some crossover. However, NLP does not teach therapeutic and clinical skills needed to work with clients in a therapeutic way. Proper hypnotherapy training will include NLP as part of the training.

Also, Mindfulness is not hypnotherapy, although again there is some crossover. Proper hypnotherapy training will include Mindfulness as part of the training.

The term therapist can be problematic, as a therapist is associated with providing some form of therapy, whether physical or psychological. In some countries/states you cannot use the term therapist unless you are a licenced healthcare practitioner, with years of training behind you. In other countries/states the term therapist can be used freely without restriction. Also, in some countries performing hypnosis on the public is outlawed.

The same goes for recognised professional bodies and organisations, who will require physical practise training hours in order to allow you membership to their organisation.

Some classroom hypnotherapy courses are taught over a few days and some over a few months or years. In order to become a recognised practitioner, you will need about 120 hours of practical hands on experience, in addition to many more hours of theoretical training. This cannot be learned in a few days or in a short space of time. Intensive courses are a waste of time, as you will not retain any of the learning, the only one benefiting from these courses is the training provider. If you want to learn to be a proper hypnotherapist then expect your training to last for months rather than days.
